UCPH Summer School in Nano-Science


Characterising the smallest structures in natural and manmade materials in order to understand their properties and structural evolution we have to use the largest instruments producing high flux beams of neutrons and X-ray radiation. During the last 2-3 decades the facilities have gotten increasingly advanced and powerful. These years are especially exciting in Scandinavia, since two new facilities, European Spallation Source(neutron facility) and MAX-IV Laboratory (X-ray synchrotron facility), will be opened for the scientific community. We will then have world class facilities for probing nanoscale structures in our “backyard”.

In the UCPH Summer School for Nano-Science you will be introduced by leading scientist to a broad series of techniques that can be conducted at these new facilities and see how they are applied to study many different materials; natural and synthetic, soft and hard.   



  • Small (neutron and X-ray) angle scattering (SANS and SAXS)
  • Wide angle and total scattering (pair distribution function analysis)
  • X-ray absorption spectroscopy (e.g. EXAFS)
  • X-ray and neutron tomography (including ptychographic X-ray tomography)
  • Circular dichroism
  • X-ray and neutron reflectivity
  • Quasielastic neutron scattering
  • X-ray and neutron diffraction


  • Hard nanoparticles
  • Functional materials – e.g. batteries, catalysts
  • Soft matter – e.g. colloidal particles
  • Interfaces
  • Magnetic materials
